The Shoestring welcomes story pitches that adhere to these guidelines. Please get in touch.
- 250 words or less
- An analysis of power relating to your story
- A bit of the who/what/when/where/why
- What research do you plan to do?
- Who will be interviewed?
- Are there any particular kinds of support you will need to complete your story?
- If it isn’t obvious, what is the local angle?
- An approximate word count
Please do not send us a pitch for something you have already written.
If you have not previously written for The Shoestring, please include a writing sample or two with your pitch.
Once you’ve contacted us, an editor will be in touch within a week. For transparency, we will send you an up-to-date pay matrix along with our confirmation of commission. All submissions meeting the above criteria are welcome, but pitches featuring themes of food/environmental justice, housing rights, education, organizing with and by societally marginalized groups or featuring deep dives into local history will be extra welcome.
